Review I've finally had a chance to see the first episode of the new anime "Gakuen Alice" and I'm not quite sure how to react to it at this point. On one hand the writing is fast-paced and smart, but on the other hand I can't get myself to warm up to the two main characters. What we have here is a series that at first viewing feels like CLAMP doing a retelling of "Kodomo no Omocha". But since I'm one of those rare fans who didn't like "Kodocha", this isn't a big selling point with me.
My first problem is that I just found the two main characters irritating rather than endearing. Mikan struck me as an idiot (maybe an idiot savant?) while Hotaru struck me as a self-centered twit. But the introduction of additional characters at the end of the episode holds some faint promise that the series won't just be about Mikan getting through troubles by dumb luck.
My second problem is that I've seen all this too many times before in other anime, and the first episode of Gakuen Alice just doesn't meet my gut-feeling "novelty" threshold that it would have to in order for me to look beyond the main characters. So I'll watch another episode or two of this series, but I'm not expecting a lot at this point.
