Fantasy Novel

Notes Adapted from the manga by Moyoco Anno, published in "Nakayoshi " magazine. Manga licensed in US by Del Rey.
Classification shoujo
Synopsis Vanilla and Chocolate are sent to Earth to collect crystalline hearts from the locals. The one who collects the most hearts will be the next queen of their magic world. But these "hearts" have to be hearts created from the emotion of love, so this is not as simple a quest as the girls first suppose.

Blond-haired Vanilla is shy and nervous, but also happens to be the daughter of the present queen. Red-haired Chocolate is genki and aggressive and happens to be the daughter of a poor common magician. They are boarded with a resident warlock from their world who is there to guide them on their quest. He also happens to be a bishi rock star (called "Rock 'n Lovin") in his spare time. The two girls are registered in school and start out their quest by pledging that no matter who becomes queen they will always remain best of friends.

Review For those folks who have been in mahou shoujo "withdrawal" lately from the lack of new shows, TV Tokyo has started a new Saturday morning series called "Sugar Sugar Rune". This is a bright, lively and fast-paced take on the traditional mahou shoujo plot of magic girls on Earth for a quest.

The first episode of "Sugar Sugar Rune" handled the introduction to the story quite well. You have a traditional mahou shoujo story line done in a very up-to-date manner that will satisfy both long time fans as well as the current target audience of pre-teen girls. The only thing that I found a bit disconcerting in the first episode was the character designs of the main characters, but that is a minor point. So if you want a "sweet" mahou shoujo fix you should try out "Sugar Sugar Rune".

BTW - there isn't a lot of information on the official TV Tokyo site:
http://www.tv-tokyo.co.jp/anime/sugar/
But that may change as the series progresses.
The other official site:

has much more info.

"Sugar Sugar Rune" continues to be one of my favorite series of the current season and episode 12 is a great example of why. Chocolate notices that people find cats to be very "cute" and so she decides to become a cat for a while in order to collect some easy hearts. Things start out fine as Chocolate turns into a very cute pink cat and attracts a lot of attention. But then Akira, her classmate who happens to be a UFO nut, hears Chocolate talking to herself while in cat form and decides that he has found an Alien Cat.

All sorts of fun occur subsequently as Akira collects more classmates to go on the hunt for the "Alien Cat" and at the same time Chocolate loses her pendent and thus can't change back to her usual form. Vanilla comes to the rescue, but Vanilla's magic is iffy at the best of times and under pressure doesn't always give the "optimal" results. In the end Chocolate is rescued in an unexpected manner and we get more hints about some of the scenes in the opening animation.

All-in-all, the episode was witty, fast-paced, funny and smart - all the things that you hope for in a well done shoujo anime. The music is also improving and there are some nice 60s-style bossa nova pieces in the BGM that are quite enjoyable. I'm going to have to hunt around for the R2 DVDs now - I believe that the first one comes out in October.
