Fantasy Novel

Notes From the manga "Mahou no Stage Fancy Lala" [Magical Stage Fancy Lala] by Kasuga Rurika, (2 vols), originally published in Ribon Mascot magazine.
Single OVA, 50 mins, Studio Pierrot, 1988 [Shoujo Anime List]
Classification shoujo
Synopsis The OVA is set in a seaside town in Europe, and asides from Miho, a young girl interested in fashion design and living at her aunt's dress shop, the main character is the Mayor's estranged son, a kind of biker "Rebel Without a Cause" character known as "Kid", who returns to stir up trouble. The latter part of the story involves Miho, her interest in fashion, her transformation into an older girl, a magic book and the two cute little dinosaurs. Miho tries to make a dress for her older cousin to wear at a dance contest organised by the Mayor, but 'Kid' seems bent on sabotaging the contest, and the aunt is equally negative about Miho's aspirations as a designer.

Eleven year old Miho is a future fashion designer. She worked hard for the fashion design of a dancing queen contest...(HBV)

Review This is the original, made several years before the TV series. It flopped, and the creators of the TV series used only a few key elements, namely Miho, her interest in fashion, her transformation into an older girl, a magic book and the two cute little dinosaurs. Dated and somewhat unconvincing, and inferior to the later TV series.

A magical girl series with Lala being the magical girl and Miho as the protagonist. (HBV) Rating **
