Synopsis | Average loser boy Moteuchi Youta rents a "video girl" video which magically generates a three-dimensional video girl, (Ai) slightly damaged by Youta's duff VCR, but programmed to help Youta with his love-life until her timer expires. Youta loves schoolmate Moemi, who unhelpfully has fallen for Youta's more personable school friend Takashi. Alternately helped and hindered by Ai, Youta, Moemi, Ai and friends engage in a tortuous dance of teenage emotion and sexual longing. |
Review | I'm not sure how well this has weathered since its release, but it's still as good as any of the "magical girlfriend/ loser boy" anime. It's heart is in the right place, with more teenage desperation than farce, though there are also plenty of fan service and panty shots. The anime is not as good as the manga, which is one of the best-ever books on teenage love angst (and also astonishingly erotic without containing anything explicit enough to get it busted). Characterisation is rather erratic, with Moemi being sometimes drippy little girl and sometime teenage sexpot, and Ai's role veering from one extreme to another. |
