Notes | = Magical Angel Creamy Mami. Fr.="Creamy Merveilleux Creamy" A shoujo magical-girl anime. Genre(s): comedy, magical girl Image: Yuu There is a manga by Arai Kiyoko. |
Classification | shoujo |
Synopsis | Another oldish magical-girl shoujo anime, in which the heroine Yuu (another tomboy) chases after a UFO on her roller-skates, (towed by a kind of motorised monowheel), meets the aliens, is given a couple of cat-like aliens as pets, and also a magical baton. The baton allows Yuu to transform into a much older and prettier girl, who is promptly discovered as an idol singer, Creamy Mami. (Yuu's parents run a mobile fast-food stall "Creamy"). |
Review | If you think the above summary sounds very odd, you're probably right, though equally bizarre things happen in many magical-girl anime. It's an amusing series, likeable but not really exceptional. "Creamy" is rather insipid-looking, though she can be stubborn. I preferred the looks of her singing rival, a real woman (!) who is rather a bitch, though we can sympathise with her a bit for being upstaged by a younger rival. There is quite a lot of mildly sexual innuendo. Yuu is only of elementary school age but there are many glimpses of her underpants and she has two admirers who are teenage boys. One, the handsome one, is really a fan of Creamy, while the other, a great lump of a boy, is in love with young Yuu and in the early episodes keeps trying to give her flowers. Non-native English speakers should be aware that even the title could be taken as having indecent meanings. Tut tut. There are several points of similarity with the magical-girl series (and OVA) Magical Stage Fancy Lala, but it has to be said that the Fancy Lala TV series, made 15 years later than Creamy Mami, is much more sophisticated in its treatment. |
