Synopsis A new girl, Aiko Mimura, arrives at St Michael's Academy and defies both the staff and the "Girls Crusaders." Things soon get quite unhealthy.
Later Hans Heidler, a youth from the Children's Crusade is brought into the story, and also the unsavoury trade in "Comfort Women" during the Second World War. The second volume features a school revolt, and even drags in the Amakusa Rebellion, an obscure incident in medaeval Japanese history, when the Bafuku was trying to wipe out Christianity in Japan.
I'm trying to give some identifying details without giving too much of the story away.
Review St MICHAEL'S ACADEMY (fan subtitled by Arctic Animation)
Not just another Japanese girls' school story in which things go a little too far; this quickly distinguishes itself with with an intelligent and articulate script. In particular, it captures brilliantly the spirit of adolescent rebellion against authority and dullness. However, the ending of the second volume is rather weak.
The school, a hotbed of sexually charged repression, purports to prepare girls for the Takarazuka stage company. However its real purpose is much more strange and sinister. This is one of the most daring pieces of anime I have seen, and may well leave unwary viewers with their jaws hanging open. Not for the usual reasons, though there is plenty ov violence and a certain amount of sexuality, so much as for the sheer surprise engendered by many scenes, and also for what it attacks. Japan is not a Christian country and the eye this turns on the Christian religion is not a sympathetic one. First time viewers may well watch much of the video in a state of this-can't-be-happening disbelief! It helps to be well read enough to appreciate what is being attacked here. To give you some idea of the tone, one of the less shocking bits is the lesbian scene where one of the most fanatical of the Girl Crusaders is seduced. I shall not reveal more, save that this one makes JESUS OF MONTREAL look like THE TEN COMMANDMENTS.
Decidedly not recommended for children, or for devout Christians.
