Title (English) | Utsonomiko |
Title (Japanese) | Tanjo hen Utsonomiko | Advertising Fantasy Novel |
Notes | AKA: "Celestial Prince". Movie, 1989, 13 OVAs & a second movie, the second being a reworking of the OVA series. Based on novel by Keisuke Fujikawa. |
Classification | - |
Synopsis | Set in mythical 7th century Japan. The divine child Utsonomiko is born with a tiny horn on his head but is otherwise a typical mythic hero. He is trained in fighting by the priest Ojino, but will only ever fight using a bamboo staff. He and fis friends are forced to fight a cruel overlord and his diabolical allies. Apparently the OVA series has a different plot involving a magic ship and a visit to Heaven, where the hero fights with the gods. |
Review | UTSONOMIKO (Kadokawa) A fantasy anime with a magical mediaeval Japanese setting. This features a team of young Ninja types in light-coloured clothing, and there is a fair admixture of comedy. The principal characters appear to be indestructible despite being stabbed, magicked, thrown off cliffs etc. Yes, it seemed a bit juvenile to me, though it has its moments. It's not that bad, but I felt that for once the obscurity was deserved. The same company made WEATHERING CONTINENT, ARISLAN, AND SILENT MOBIUS which are all much superior. |
