Synopsis | Sensational tale of teenage ennui.(GC) A constant high school gang wars centering on KUROKU Asuka, the toughest "bad" girl of all anime. (HBV) |
Review | This is a story of schoolgirl gangs. It opens with Asuka rescuing a fellow schoolgirl, Yotsuko, from a gang of girls from another school. Asuka is outnumbered but, as she shows her backside to the gang in the ultimate gesture of disrespect, Asuka's West District gang appear from hiding places overlooking the scene. Asuka picks up a diary belonging to Yotsuko. Next morning, Asuka's mother looks in to see Asuka innocently asleep with a cuddly toy but as soon as the girl wakes her parents react with nervous alarm! At school Asuka returns the diary but spurns Yotsuko's overtures of friendship. The gang clashes continue. Yotsuko contemplates suicide but is stopped by Asuka, who still howerver rejects her. As her gang prepares for the final battle, Asuka produces a crateful of Molotov cocktails and insouciantly uses one on a police car as she and her gang are driving to the docks, The dock scenes appear to be set near Harumi, the venue of the twice-yearly Comic Market. This is an exciting anime with unusual street scenes and some interesting characters.(GC) The independence and vision of Asuka, along with the fact that the anime is about high school gangs make this a unique work among shoujo animes.
