Synopsis Set in a world that is a combination of the old Spanish Main and Sinbad.
Rufi, Nami, Zoro and Usopu ( without Sanji who hadn't shown up at that point in the TV series ) go chasing around an island, looking for a treasure and fighting a nasty bad guy.
Review Well, this has certainly been "movie week in Mississauga" for me. I just finished watching the "One Piece" movie, which makes three new anime movies in a row this week. The DVD was put out by Toei, #DSTD02004, 50 minutes, 16:9 or letterbox aspect options, 4500 Yen. The movie originally came out summer last year.
The movie is very much like a "One Piece" TV "special". The opening animation was exactly the same animation and song from the series as it ran on TV last year. And the same closing song was used, only the closing animation in the movie was different - they used a number of still shots which weren't from the TV series so I assume that they were based on the manga or calendars or the like. The oddest thing about the movie is that the character designs weren't quite as "good" as in the TV series, particularly the distance shots. Overall, there is sort of a "rush" feeling to the animation.
The plot is very simple and similar to that of the recent TV "special" which was almost as long, but for the commercials. Rufi, Nami, Zoro and Usopu ( without Sanji who hadn't shown up at that point in the TV series ) go chasing around an island, looking for a treasure and fighting a nasty bad guy.
All-in-all, the movie was "okay", if slightly uninspired. If you wanted to get a feel for the series you would probably be better off picking up the first couple of DVD's from the TV series instead. The humor, character development and action in the TV story arcs are all done better than in the movie.
