Synopsis | The story starts out with Conan and the "Detective Boys" witnessing the gunning down of a police inspector, but not seeing who the criminal was. Then, a second police inspector is gunned down, and the police suddenly get tight lipped about what is going on, even to the extent of not talking to Mouri Kogoro, thus, the alternate title, "Need Not to Know". Then, at a wedding party for a young policeman, Ran is caught in an ambush where Sato-keiji is shot. Ran sees the shooter, but goes into shock and loses her memory.
From that point onwards, the movie becomes very tense and surprisingly serious and dark for a Conan movie, as the police, Kogoro and Conan try to figure out how to protect the now rather helpless Ran and at the same time figure out who the killer is. This is complicated by a situation in which "pressure" from higher up in the Police Department is attempting to keep things quiet to avoid scandal. As with any good Conan story, red herrings abound, as do plenty of legitimate clues. Then, Conan finally realizes who the killer is and has to set out to save Ran who is once again at "Tropical Land". This leads to the tremendous action climax which is typical of all the Conan movies. (Dave Baranyi) |
Review | Like all the Conan laser discs, what you get with the DVD is pretty sparse - a generic DVD clamshell, a relatively nice cover, and nothing else. No fillers, no booklets, not even any ads. But what's on the disc is what counts if you are a Conan fan. The 4th movie starts out showing us a little of Shin'ichi and Ran at the "Tropical Land" theme park on that fateful day when Shin'ichi ran into Gin and was turned back into a little kid. Like the openings of all of the Conan films, this isn't just "filler" and comes back to play a critical role in the denouement of the film. Then, during the opening credits, we get the usual "introduction" to Conan, his situation and the rest of the main cast. This is a very astute move on the part of Shogakukan, because it means that non-Conan "addicts" have a reasonable chance of following the convoluted goings on. Of course, it helps immensely to know the relationships between the characters that have been developed during the previous 3 movies and 200 plus TV episodes. (g) .......... All-in-all, this was a superb mystery movie, with great pacing, a solid, "no cheat" mystery, the usual great Conan background music, and all the regular characters, particularly the adults. We also get to see more of Ran's mother than usual, which is always a big plus by me. ( One of the many things that I've always enjoyed about "Meitantei Conan" is its plethora of smart, adult "babes" in the series. ) So, if you are a Conan addict, you have no excuse, get the film and watch it. If you aren't and you like mysteries, try it anyway. BTW - although the 5th Conan movie is due out in April, so far all the TV ads and the ad on this DVD have been "teasers" with no info or pictures, a very different approach for the Conan movies.
