Synopsis
Review I've been enjoying the Wowow production of CLAMP's "X" TV since it started a couple of months ago and have reached the halfway point in the series. The combination of apocalyptic battles, mystic fatalism and intense characters has me looking forward to each ensuing episode. I am at somewhat of a disadvantage because I haven't been following the manga, but the TV series has been doing a fairly good job of filling in the background of the story and the characters. Never-the-less, in early December when I read somewhere that the "X" OAV from last Fall was a precursor of sorts to the TV anime, I decided to order the OAV, and it arrived yesterday along with the rest of my New Year's shipment from CD Japan. So this evening I had a chance to watch the "X" OAV. The OAV is from Kadowka Video in association with Bandai Emotion - # BCBA-0911, 37 minutes, 4:3 aspect ratio, 4,200 Yen. Inside the DVD box there is a 12 page booklet which in a nice, concise manner introduces all of the main characters, including romagi and furigana for the name kanji of each character.
Well, it turns out that what I read wasn't quite right. Instead of being a prologue to the TV series, the OAV is essentially a preview of the first half of the TV series, tied together by a narrative told by Kakyo Kuduki. We see a series of short scenes from a number of episodes, but nothing independent really happens. We do find out "how" Kakyo got to the limbo in which we see him in the middle episodes of the TV series, but not really why ( that is, the background on how he fits into the overall story ).
This leaves an interesting conundrum - who should and shouldn't watch the OAV? If you are already watching the TV series like me, the OAV doesn't really add anything to it. On the other hand, if you watch the OAV before watching the TV series you will see a number of major spoilers. I guess that the OAV is really only for those folks who are trying to collect "everything" concerning "X".
That's not to say that the OAV isn't nice to look at - the animation quality is very good. And the music is nice too, although they don't use the wonderful ending theme, "Secret Sorrow" from the TV series. ( I also received the full length version of "Secret Sorrow" in yesterday's package - Victor Entertainment, VICL-35328. The full version is about 4 1/2 minutes long. ) There is also a "making of" video after the end of the OAV. But in the end the "X" OAV wasn't what I had hoped it might be. (Dave Baranyi)
