Synopsis
Review Question - What do you get when you cross "You're Under Arrest" with "Bubble Gum Crisis"?
Answer - Road kill - AKA - "eX Driver".
The theme song for this OAV ought to be "Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road". ( What, you don't believe me that there is such a song? Look it up - it's an "American Classic". )
I just watched the first episode of this six-part OAV. I had seen TV and end-of-disc ads for this series a ton of times when it came out in 2000, but I didn't think I would be interested in it. And, thanks to the Kids Station in Japan, I found out that I was right, and at only the cost of mailing a tape from Japan to Canada. ( And that tape also has episodes of "Azumanga Daioh", "Okojo-san", "Atashi'n-chi" and "Princess Tutu" on it, so they justify the airmail cost several times over. )
What is this sad waste of video tape about? In some distant ( or near - who cares ) future, Tokyo is essentially one huge, bright and clean pedestrian mall which happens to be crisscrossed with nearly empty highways. Only rental robo-cars traverse these highways, with the exception of the "eX Drivers", "elite" auto drivers whose jobs are to save motorists from the occasional AI breakdown of the Boomer, oops, I mean robo-car. It also happens that two of the premier drivers are cute teenaged girls who, when not chasing renegade robo-cars, sit around in bars, complaining that no guys want to pick them up. Soon enough, they get their just deserts in the form of a new male partner, who happens to be a precocious 12 year old.
The animation is quite good, and the cityscapes are reminiscent of new condo development ads ( all shiny and bright ), but the show is fundamentally as shallow as an oil slick on hot pavement. YUA fans will probably love this show, and BGC fans ought to watch it, if only to realize that BGC 2040 wasn't so bad after all. But everyone else ought to stay off the pavement. (Dave Baranyi)
