From the manga by OHSHIMA Yumiko, published in LaLa magazine, 1978.

Synopsis A young man named Tokio, who lives with his parents, takes in a kitten. She has trouble winning over Tokio's mother, who is allergic to cats.
Chibineko is heartbroken when Toshio falls in love with a girl he meets in the park. Then she meets the handsome, silvery cat, Raphael, who explains that she and Toshio can never really be together. (GC)

OHSHIMA Yumiko's story of Chibi Neko, a kitten who believes she will grow up to become a human being. _Wata no kuni-hoshi_ ("The Country-Star of Cotton") can be enjoyed on the level of a simple, sometimes funny, sometimes touching coming-of-age story, but if you look beyond the surface, you can find some profound insights about what it means to be a "girl," what it means to be a "woman," what it means to be a "mother," and also about the frightening aspects of growing up. (MAT)

Review A charming movie about a cat that thinks it's a little girl. In the movie we see the cat as she imagines herself, but the humans see her as a cat.
The story is sometimes dramatic and often sad.
Recommended. (GC)

The anime is fairly well-made (by Tezuka Productions), and manages to capture some (but not all) of Oshima's brilliant manga's depth, but I thought it was miscast. Definitely worth checking out. (MAT) Rating ****
