Synopsis
Review “Shoot me! Shoot me now!” (Daffy Duck to Elmer Fudd in error, after repeatedly trying to get Elmer to shoot Bugs Bunny.)

There are always downsides to new technologies. I just ran into one the other evening – an OAV that I downloaded via bit torrent called “First Love Story”. This is a 2000 release that was based upon a PlayStation game. Normally, I won’t even bother with this sort of date-sim to OAV conversion, but I thought that it might be something else, and I had the time, so I just let the download go.

Now, I have often heard from well-meaning folks who insist that you can’t really tell what a show or a series will really be like until you watch the whole thing. I don’t happen to abide by that concept, and sure enough within the first couple of seconds of watching “First Kiss” I knew that I was in “trouble” and that unless this was a parody, this would be a Grade A pain to watch. But what the hell – I figured I’d watch it anyway - it was only thirty minutes long.

Well, let me tell you, watching that 30 minutes was like being claw-gutted for thirty minutes (cf - “Narutaru” episode 12). High school senior Kana is pining away because her older boyfriend Yoshihiko is off at university and too busy to call or see her. Because of this Kana’s marks are going down just as she must do well in her exams so that she can be accepted in the same university as Yoshihiko.

One morning Kana stomps out of the house in a pms fury and in school finds that Shogo, a new temporary teacher, has arrived for two weeks. Shogo reminds Kana of her late father, and sure enough it turns out that Shogo is a cousin who will be staying at Kana’s house, at the invitation of her mother. Kana is pissed at this at first, but soon gets over it because of Shogo’s resemblance to her father.

Well, Shogo turns out to be a good influence on Kana, but now the long-absent Yoshihiko comes back for a weekend and gets jealous of Shogo. Kana gets jealous too, as she watches an old girl friend of Yoshihiko chat him up at a pool one day. So the lovebirds break up. But just as Shogo is about to leave, he gets an opportunity to encourage Kana to make up with Yoshihiko and everyone lives happily ever after.

I kid you not. Add to this grade school quality plotting some incredibly banal dialog (the subtitles couldn’t come close to capturing the inanity of the conversations) and some of the worst fixed-frame animation you’ve seen in years, and it boggles the mind that “First Kiss Story” was every released on anything other than toilet paper, let alone for $6800 Yen on tape in 2000. For the life of me, I can’t understand who the audience for this show was supposed to be.

So be warned – there are some horrible ways to waste time and bandwidth out there. Don’t let something like “First Kiss Story” happen to you.
