Fantasy Novel

Notes Based on a manga. Aria (manga) by Kozue Amano is a sequel of Aqua (manga). Both are about the same girl, Akari Mizunashi, who hopes to become a female gondolier and tour guide.
There is also an anime sequel: ARIA The NATURAL (TV)
Classification sci-fi
Synopsis On the planet Aqua (terraformed Mars) lies Neo Venezia, a city of canals, built in the style of the Italian original. Neo Venezia is a tourist destination in which people travel around in gondolas. Professional female gondoliers are known as Undines and are much appreciated as they act as tour guides for the visitors. Akari Mizunashi, newly arrived from Earth (called Man-Home in the anime) is a gondolier in training and also an employee of Aria Company. She gets to meet all sorts of people, as she takes them on the gondola rides.
Review This is a strikingly beautiful anime, both in the designs of the girls and their clothes, and also in the backgrounds.

It has to be said that there is not much in the way of exciting plot. In the first episode, what happens is that young Akari is minding the ARIA office when she takes a curious telephone call, and then finds an obstinate little girl crouched in Akari's gondola. Akari is not supposed to take paying customers, so she is persuaded to take the girl for a ride as her "friend". En route they encounter the slightly older Aika, (see art sample) who apparently is another ARIA undine (female gondolier), and who is also induced to join the party. Akari's odd cat/dog pet drifts away on a wide canal and has to be rescued by a hasty pursuit (Akari can scull faster going backwards.) The creature is eventually whisked out of the water by the more experienced ARIA undine Alicia who, it turns out, guided the little girl's big sister some time ago.

Possibly this sounds more event-filled than it actually appears on sceeen, as there is a notable absence of dramatic tension. In fact various viewers have commented that the anime is very pleasantly restful to watch!

On the evidence of the first episode, the opportunity to create something distinctively "Martian" has been missed, and for the most part it might as well have been set on Earth, or even in the original Venice. There is no red desert, no close horizon, no peaky and slow-moving waves, no strangely coloured sky.
