Fantasy Novel

Notes Movie, 91 mins. Not to be confused with the "Goshogun Etranger" movie.
Every Japanese schoolkid would recognise the names of Nobunaga Oda and Tokugawa Ieyasu, and know something of their history. Oda and Ieyasu were largely responsible for unifying feudal Japan. Non-Japanese viewers will find the story much more interesting if they are aware that Oda and Ieyasu were associates, and that in 1582, Nobunaga Oda was in Kyoto at a place known as the Honno-ji,and had temporarily reduced his immediate bodyguard to 100 men. A general called Akechi Mitsuhide, under Oda's command, turned his forces around and exclaimed "The enemy is in the Honno-ji!" Oda was killed in the attack on his residence.

Synopsis Jiro Agino, a time-traveller fleeing from the future, hijacks a photographer's minivan and its passengers; an ill-assorted handful of students and their teacher. With Jiro's portable time-travel engine attached to the dashboard, they touch down in WW2 Japan and the Meiji era, before having a lengthier adventure in the feudal era.
Review As an animated movie, it now seems rather dated in style, and it has to be said that the sci-fi element is not 100% convincing. Those who look beyond the visuals of their anime may recognise the names of famous animation crew including designers Moto Hagio, and Koji Morimoto (later director of Memories). It was never picked up for US release, and today, comparing it with later movies like Vexille, this does not seem so surprising.
