Synopsis | The story revolves around a 15-year-old boy who travels back in time - over 1,200 years ago to the Heian period - and faces a war between oni (demons) and humans in the former Japanese capital of Kyoto. The Oni represent the pastoralists while their opponents, led by a monk with magical powers, represent the forces of development. Our hero is brought back in time by the monk, but becomes unsure which side he should be supporting. He is directed to fight against the Oni using a flying dragon, but encounters an Oni girl. |
Review | The animation of the historic battle scenes is good but the story, like the hero, seems unsure where it stands, as the bad guys' "development" agenda led to our own developed world. The conflict is not seriously explored. The movie ends with a supernatural good guy vs. bad guy battle of the kind we have seen so many times before in anime. It seems though that the movie was designed to appeal to the younger general public rather than anime fans. Overall, a mediocre effort. |
