Synopsis | The story is set during Japan's Warring States era and centers on
Furuta Sasuke, a vassal of the great warlord Oda Nobunaga. He is
obsessed with tea ceremony and material elegance, rather than with
war. Sasuke is torn between his love of art and his desire for
material advancement. In the first episode, our hero is seated at a meeting headed by scary warlord Oda Nobunaga, and thinking rude things about the attire of the other people in the room, till Oda asks him what's so funny. Oda sends Sasuke to negotiate with a rebellious vassal, who happens to have a cast-iron tea-kettle which Sasuke is desperate to possess. |
Review | This anime is very closely based on the manga of the same title,
which won the Osamu Tezuka manga prize in 2010, and it is being
animated for NHK as a 39 episode series. Despite this it has
attracted almost no interest outside Japan. Right from the start it's clear that this is a funny and clever satiric historical drama. The main character, Sasuke Furuta, is based on a real person from the period. Other major characters are real people. If the names Mitsuhide Akechi, Hideyoshi Hashiba, Nobunaga Oda, and Ieyasu Tokugawa mean nothing to you, you are not going to get much out of this series. To a Japanese viewer, these names are as familiar as Henry VIII and Sir Francis Drake would be to us. The series pays great attention to historical details, and many scenes relate to real incidents, real locations or real artefacts. Oda is portrayed as a powerful man, rather than some sort of monster. It seems he really did wear Western clothes, as shown, and even the weird spectacled helmet he wears in one episode is based on a real one that Oda could have known about. There is not much violent action, but watching older guys talking is far from dull. The fascination lies in watching who is plotting against whom. Highly recommended, for those with an interest in Japanese history and culture. |
