Synopsis "Gatekeepers" is a story about a fight by a secret organization called A.E.G.I.S. against an unknown adversary which is trying to conquer the Earth. A group of teenagers with special psi powers are recruited to fight the invaders. But the interesting twist to the story is that it is set in Japan in 1969, giving a sense of nostalgia to go with the sci-fi premise. The story is also subtly tongue-in-cheek, but not in a manner that gets in the way of the action. My guess is that "Gatekeepers" will be a hit since it ties so many positive things in a nicely "different" package. Review I just got to watch my first new show of the new Spring anime season in Japan - "Gatekeepers". This is a new Wowow show, so it has lots of great CG, detailed backgrounds and a generally bright look to it. It is also very energetically paced, with slam bang action right from the start. Interestingly enough, "Gatekeepers" is a Japan/Korea joint production, with most of the animation staff being Korean.

Gate Keepers was based on the same titled game for PlayStation, and the game was released in the end of the last year. So called multi-media animation. Big budget 'A' class animation.
A big hope for this series was an combination of Satou Jyun'ichi (general director, who directed the first season of Sailor Moon and Yumeno Crayon Oukoku) and Goto Keiji (character design, who did the design for Kidou Senkan Nadeshico and Akihabara Dennou Gumi).
The keyword of this series was 1960's. A homage to the age of Japanese high growth economy. It just fits with the childhood of the creators themselves and I am myself, too. The beginning of the show is set in 1969, and I was 13 years old, just the same as the age of the hero. I can remember the scenario of them clearly. [According to D.B. The hero is 17 -GC].
The story was simple. An invader appeared and try to invade the Earth. Against the invader, humans established an organization called Aesis. One day the hero was involved into the battle of Aesis and invaders. There was a girl who had a mysterious power to keep control the gate of time-space and fought against the invaders. Her name was Ikusawa Ruriko, a Gatekeeper of the Life....
The digital effect of the animation was quite effective, and spectacular full orchestration soundtrack composed by Tanaka Kohei (Sakura Taisen) was quite exciting. The plot was a bit stereotypical ESP story, but was enough enjoyable as far as the first episode goes. Highly recommended for the ordinal mecha/action anime fan who is looking for something different. Also [if you are] someone who is interested in the modern history of Japan, you can't miss the 60's fashion of this. Overall my impression was that it quite resembled the many SpFX live action stuff which appeared in the 70s. My evaluation was A- . (CALCI)
I have finished watching up to the 2nd [episode] yesterday. The overall quality still OK, but was strange/stupid as Nadeshico, probably because of Goto Keiji's design. Basically I am satisfied with the quality, but still I feel like there was some missing factor which would attract me. I haven't found the reason yet. But Tanaka Kouhei's soundtrack (when it will come out) will be 'must buy' for me. Definitely great! (CALCI )

Now I just watched the end of "Gatekeepers" - that's two recent favorites finished in one evening. "Gatekeepers" was the "pleasant surprise" for me this summer. I haven't liked anime based on video games in the past, but "Gatekeepers" was entertaining and self-supporting enough that it didn't matter that I haven't played the game. It also helped that the opening "gimmick" of the show being set in 1969/70 made it interesting to watch from the point of view of checking out how accurately the details were done. And I also liked the characters and plot development. Although the show was predictable in many ways ( teens with special powers fight alien invaders ), it was done very "faithfully" to the type. None of the episodes were boring and right up to the end there were nicely done "surprises". So while the series didn't really break any new ground, I looked forward to each episode and was eminently satisfied with the ending. The first video for the series is coming out this month and you could do a lot worse than choose "Gatekeepers" as an action sci-fi series to watch. Dave Baranyi
