Title (English) | Saiyuuki |
Title (Japanese) | Gensoumaden Saiyuuki | Advertising Fantasy Novel |
Notes | New series, 2000. Based on the fantasy novel by Minekura Kazuya. |
Classification | - |
Synopsis | In Togenkyo, where
human and monsters were co-exsistent, suddenly a monster went wild and attacked humans. The reason why this happened was that there must
be some secret plan to reincarnate Gyuumaou, who was sealed by the holy soldier 500 years ago. When Gyuumaou reincarnates, the Togenkyo will become hell. To block this plan, Hoppou Tenteishi Genjo Sanzou was ordered to stop this plot. There were three monsters he brought way to Tenjiku: Son Goku, Sagojyo and
Chohakkai. - (CALCI) |
Review | Saiyuuki is based on the fantasy novel by Minekura Kazuya
(monthly G Fantasy). This was a very odd story loosely based
on the Chinese classic literature, Saiyuuki.
The characters changed a great deal from the original, and all the
characters were looking quite yaoish (girly looking guys which
may attract a female audience). This animation sharply targets at
female followers, like Kaikan Phrase. Typical Pierrot stuff.
My overall impression in the first episode was B+. (CALCI) I hope these guys are both writing about the same show! (G.C.) Finally, I got to watch "Gensoumaden Saiyuuki" and finally I got something to watch that I enjoyed. "Saiyuuki" is an adventure/fantasy/satire with lots of blatantly in-your-face anachronisms, silly jokes, bloody action and both good animation and reasonably good music. The only way I can describe the first episode is to suggest that you imagine "Kaikan Phrase" done with some of the "Gokoudo-kun" cast in the style of "Super Milk-chan" and set in a "Fushigi Yuugi" world ( without, so far, a Miaka, thank God! ). To give you an example of the droll humor in the show, after the main character says that they have to "go West" to start their quest, the scene shifts to an "Old West" style town, complete with saloon and poker players - but the bar girls are all dressed in Chinese gowns and the saloon has Chinese windows! As soon as I see this sort of inspired goofiness I tend to immediately get caught up in the spirit of the show. So I'll be keeping you posted on how "Saiyuuki" goes, because this is the one show tonight that I asked my friend to keep on taping for me.
Nov.2000: "Saiyuuki" - This re-telling of the old Chinese tale has recently undergone a revision in its opening and closing ( stressing the bishounen nature of the lead characters ) as well as has introduced new, much more powerful and more menacingly ambivalent characters. (Dave Baranyi) Saw two or three episodes of this. It's a very modern, very loose interpretation of the old legend, and quite well done, with lots of comedy and lots of fighting against various monsters. Look out for the dragon that transforms into a jeep. Two of the lead characters do look a bit "bishounen". Not bad, but not essential (GC). |
Credits | Character designer was Moriyama Yuuji (Project A-ko). |
