Synopsis Set in 2070 when aliens are finally and openly showing up on Earth. A bunch of kids with super powers fight to contain the aliens, who may or may not be real threats. As well, there is more than one group of aliens showing up or living with the Humans.
Review "Gakuen Senki" has pretty good animation and production values for a TV anime. It also has a nice mix of humor and action. But the first two episodes of "Gakuen Senki" have been surprisingly leisurely paced for a kid's action series. The one jarring part is the "look" of the series - the general cityscapes and clothing of the characters is "here and now". So far the artists haven't attempted to make anything look particularly "futuristic". There is one running "gag" about the clothing - one of the mystery kids goes to school in an old school uniform that supposedly belonged to his grandfather. Uniforms are no longer mandatory in for the Japanese students in 2070, so this looks really strange to the other students.
The first two episodes have set up a number of mysteries and briefly showcased some of the characters. There is the "obligatory" younger sister for the narrator, and the "mysterious" kid has a sexy older sister who is a college student, to "entertain" the older viewers. The alien menaces so far look very similar to some of the robot threats in "Brigadoon" but the robot/mecha/whatever things that fight the aliens are rather unique - they are essentially curvilinear frameworks that pick up mass as needed from what ever is nearby, such as water.
So it looks like I'll follow this series for a while - it's an easy one for my friend to tape because it comes on immediately after "Da Da Da" on Tuesdays. If anyone is posting video captures of this series and you like intelligent kid's action shows, you might want to try out "Gakuen Senki Muryou".

Nearing end: - NHK's latest foray into sci-fi is often low-keyed and sometimes didactic in its attempts to present a plausible future world. But it is still well done with interesting characters.
