Title (English) | Last Exile - Fam, The Silver Wing |
Title (Japanese) | Last Exile: Ginyoku no Fam | Advertising Fantasy Novel |
Notes | Sequel of the 2003 TV series "Last Exile". |
Classification | SF |
Synopsis | Fam is part of the Sky Pirates, a group that assaults ships
following the code of the First Harpoon :- the first to hit the
target with a harpoon has the right to decide how to proceed on
the assault. Fam pilots a light-plane-like "Vanship" with her
friend Giselle. They target minor vessels and prosper at an isolated
location, until one day they take off for a mission that will
change their lives and for all Turan Kingdom citizens by rescuing
their 2 princess from Ades Federation betrayal. Princess Liliana, the elder, is soon lost to Ades in a confusing action. Princess Millia, determined not to give up, remains with Fam and participates in Fam's madcap efforts to capture ships and continue resistance to the Ades federation. |
Review | It soon becomes apparent that this "Last Exile" is rather different
from the previous one, opening as it does with glimpses of nudity
in the opening credits then showing Fam, in her underwear,
sleepwalking out of the door of an air-ship to dangle from a
safety line among the clouds. In the same episode, Princess Liliana
bathes in a sacred lake wearing a rather skimpy shift. The
animation of the great aerial ships and the fast-moving little
"vanships" is first-rate. However one soon gets a sense that the storyline isn't very plausible, and a lot of questions of a practical nature are thrown up and brushed aside. What exactly happens to the Turan flagship and its crew, for instance? As episode follows episode, it becomes ever more apparent that the producers have set out to make an action comedy in which cute girls do cute and adventurous things, and anything that gets in the way is brushed aside. Much of the screen time is devoted to "cute girls", and while there is a fair amount of exciting action, it's usually thoroughly implausible and any awkward details are skipped over. The ebullient Fam is built up as a brilliant pilot without a lot of on-screen evidence, just as 15-year old Giselle is supposed to have an encyclopedic knowledge of all ship plans and techical specifications. Fam's behaviour in challenging situations is usually inappropiate. It's never adequately explained why the sky pirates would put themselves in a position of conflict with the powerful Ades Federation. It's also not explained why Fam is prepared to go to such lengths to aid Princess Millia. Is Fam a lesbian? One has to say that if you were looking for a more-of-the same sequel to "Last Exile", this isn't it. If you wanted a straight and well-plotted SF steampunk drama about air warfare, look elsewhere. But if (like, it would seem, a lot of viewers) you enjoy cute girls doing cute things with a silly steampunk setting, look no further. |
