Noteworthy because of the negligible number of shoujo manga available in graphic novel form in English. This one has all the marks of a manga aimed at girls: an everyday setting of school and home, a romantic love story, and a somewhat feminine style of artwork. Apparently it was chosen for US publication partly because it has, for a shoujo manga, an unusually brisk story development of the type to which Western comic readers are more accustomed. (i.e. more than one syllable of plot development per page.) The heroine, Makoto, has a juvenile admiration for her handsome brother-in-law, who she thinks is the perfect man, and considers that her ideal man will be kind, reliable, always be with her and support her, cherish her and call her "princess". Her friends tease her for her excessively romantic expectations. Hovever, her brother-in-law's younger brother comes to stay with Makoto's family. Makoto finds him quite unlike his brother, and quarrels with him constantly. Makoto has to work out her feelings for this young man, and her feelings for her childhood friend Takayama who is on the point of declaring his love for her. Ultimately, Makoto learns to relate to the young men in a more mature way. The manga contains the intricate symbolism typical of shoujo manga, and the charming character designs seemingly appeal to American teenagers just as much as to Japanese. It's a pleasant and charming story, but one might wish for a bit more of the action and drama that is also to be found in shoujo manga (A,A', Rayearth, Tokyo Babylon, Vampire Princess Miyu, etc). Nevertheless, it's worth buying, if only for its rarity value. (GC). |
