Just had to restore the current theme which had become damaged. I also deleted a pair of files I didn’t recognise. I suspect this was a hacking attack. Wish somebody would introduce this guy to the gangs of organised criminals who keep trying to flood the site with comment spam and see how much they enjoy each other’s company…

You’re running a very old version of WordPress that’s just full of unpatched security holes. You definitely need to upgrade, and soon to at least the latest 2.3.* version. To be honest though it appears there are unpatched security holes in the latest 2.3.* version as well, only 2.5 is safe at the moment. 🙁
BTW, in case you were wondering, your WordPress version is output in the source of each page, that’s how I know you’re running an old version. 🙂
